DIY Dry Shampoo

Everyone has those days when you’ve hit the snooze button one too many times and you’re running late. But your hair doesn’t have to show it! Dry shampoos can be a great quick fix when you don’t have time to wash your hair. In the last few years, dry shampoos have been gaining popularity, especially with many stylists and dermatologists supporting the “no ‘poo movement,” claiming that frequent shampooing can strip away healthy oils and lead to dry, damaged locks.

The basic idea of a dry shampoo is to put an oil-absorbing substance on your roots to soak up the oil and leave your scalp looking clean. This will be helpful if you’re styling your hair and need it to hold. Unwashed locks hold better than clean hair, but your ‘do doesn’t have to look dirty.

Dry Shampoo Recipe for Light Hair

- ¼ cup of cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)
- 3-5 drops of scented essential oils

Dry Shampoo Recipe for Dark Hair
- 1/8 cup of cornstarch
- 1/8 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/8 cup of cinnamon
- 3-5 drops of scented essential oils

Store your dry shampoo in an airtight container and keep it close to your hair and makeup kit so that you can make it a seamless part of your morning beauty routine. Here’s how to use it:

1. Dip your makeup brush into your dry shampoo mixture and tap off any excess on the edge of your container. With your brush, apply the dry shampoo to the roots and in the areas that tend to get oily, like your bangs and part. Focus mostly on the roots, but if the rest of your hair needs freshening up, add a little more down the strands toward the tips. Make sure you don’t rub your dry shampoo into your scalp, it can accumulate and make it itch.

2. Brush your hair from root-to-tip to help distribute and blend in the dry shampoo.

3. Let it settle in — wait 5-7 minutes to let the dry shampoo absorb the oil from your hair and then style as usual.
